Warning Signs My Kia Needs a New A/C System

Car air conditioning issues are the result of a lack of refrigerant in the system due to a leak. When there is little to no refrigerant in the system, a significant reduction in pressure prevents components from cooling the inside of your cabin. Other common issues that indicate a need for new A/C include:

• Unusual High Cabin Temperature: No air cool air blowing out of your vents can lead to your interior being unbearably hot. Not only is this a failed air compressor, but causes extra issues to your engine.
• Leaks: Any leak of refrigerant or oil will obstruct the entire A/C system’s ability to function and produce cool air. Leaks will also cause damage to your evaporator or compressor. 
• Stuck A/C Compressor Clutch: The main component of your A/C unit is the compressor. A stuck clutch would not be able to transfer power from the engine over to the compressor. In most cases, you won’t be able to repair the clutch either if it has seized like this. Your only option is to replace the entire thing. 
• Loud Noises: Unusual loud noises are never a positive sign. Grinding or a squealing sound while the A/C is running in your car, could be a sign that the compressor is experiencing a problem.

Other evident signs of a depreciating air condition system may include lack of freon, fittings becoming loose, or your O-rings, hoses, or seals wearing out. 

How Often Should I Service My Car’s Air Conditioning System?

We recommend scheduling an inspection on your Kia’s A/C system at least once a year, preferably before the summer months for preparation. 

Your car’s A/C is constantly exposed to heat from your engine, dirt, road debris, vibrations, fast stops, and maybe even a run-in with a curb. This stress on the AC unit can cause small cracks to form or for the connections to become loose, allowing refrigerant to leak out.
